Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization program in south florida

If you’re suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol, you have two choices. First, you can continue down the same path until your life falls apart. If you choose this path, you have to account for all the collateral damage that you’ll leave behind in your path.

Second, you can summon the strength and courage to admit that you’re suffering from the disease of addiction. From there, you can reach out for help. The question is, “what is the best treatment option? May we recommend a partial hospitalization program from a drug rehab in South Florida?

What is a partial hospitalization program?

If you have a severe addiction problem, going through the inpatient treatment process would be preferable. Of course, we understand that some clients can’t commit to a restrictive inpatient option. In such cases, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) from a top drug rehab in South Florida becomes a good alternative.

A partial hospitalization program is the most restrictive level of the three outpatient program options (more on that below). If you were to choose this option, you would have to show up for treatment almost every day for around eight hours of treatment each day. While all three levels of outpatient care focus on individual therapy, there are two things unique about the partial hospitalization program option. Let’s discuss this further.

Access to more treatment options

With a lot more time to invest in outpatient treatment, a partial hospitalization program opens the door to more treatment options. For instance, partaking in a PHP increases the likelihood that you would get a chance to take part in group therapy sessions. There would also be more time available for family involvement by way of family therapy. Finally, there would be more time to spend on co-occurring disorders.

Co-occurring disorders are present if the client has a mental health issue that is directly contributing to their addiction. In such cases, a complicated treatment process called “dual diagnosis therapy” becomes necessary. Other than inpatient treatment, the partial hospitalization program option is the only other addiction treatment option that provides enough time to realistically address multiple of these issues.

Treatment mobility

Any top drug rehab in South Florida is going to be looking out for your best interest. A partial hospitalization program is a good choice if you have a severe addiction to drugs/alcohol. This is because PHP programs offer mobility.

What we mean by this is that, if you were to attend a partial hospitalization program and find out that it is not for you, it would be easy to transition you into an inpatient program. In fact, it is easier to transition from partial hospitalization program treatment to inpatient treatment than any other outpatient treatment program. On the flip side, if you show great progress at the partial hospitalization program level, your therapist would have the option of moving you into a less restrictive program.

A comparison of other addiction treatment options

As a top drug rehab in South Florida, we want to make sure that you get the level of care that you want and need. That means being able to offer you a custom treatment plan that addresses your unique circumstances. In order to do that, we need to offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment options. To help you better understand where the partial hospitalization program option stands in our treatment scheme, we offer the following comparisons.

Partial hospitalization program treatment vs. Inpatient treatment

If your addiction problem seems severe, the right call would be for you to commit to an inpatient treatment program. An inpatient treatment program would give you access to multiple therapists, which is a benefit to you.

As part of inpatient treatment, you would also get access to all available treatment options. That would include group therapy programs. Group therapy is a wonderful treatment tool. This is because, within the addiction treatment community, there’s a sense that clients can benefit by helping each other.

Another major benefit of inpatient treatment is the fact that while attending an inpatient treatment program, you would have little to no access to drugs/alcohol or improper influences. This fact would diminish the chances of you relapsing while in treatment. As a result of no adverse influences, you would also get to focus on therapy without interference from outside sources.

During partial hospitalization program treatment, you would get the same level of care in terms of therapy as you would in inpatient treatment. You would also get access to quality treatment professionals who can help you with a wide range of treatment options.

The major difference between inpatient and partial hospitalization program treatment has to do with your level of responsibility. With inpatient treatment, a lot of decision-making options are gone. A partial hospitalization program, on the other hand, is a great alternative if you can control your impulses, make good decisions, and avoid relapsing.

Partial hospitalization versus other outpatient treatment options

If a drug rehab in South Florida offers outpatient care, they very likely offer all three options:

  • General Outpatient
  • Intensive Outpatient
  • Partial Hospitalization Program

When attending all three outpatient care options, you would go through the therapeutic process with assigned therapists. While technically living at home, you would have scheduled appointments during the week. To remain in good standing, you would have to follow certain rules, including:

  • Absolutely zero tolerance for substance use
  • Agree to random drug testing
  • Show up for all appointments on time
  • Continue showing good progress

These rules are all common among the three outpatient options. However, there are differences between the three that are worthy of discussion.

Partial hospitalization program treatment versus general outpatient treatment

The least restrictive outpatient care option is general outpatient treatment. The time required to attend genernal outpatient treatment would be limited to a couple of days a week for a couple of hours at a time.

While the partial hospitalization program option focuses heavily on therapy and developing coping skills, the general outpatient option is more geared towards recovery maintenance. Therefore, regular outpatient treatment would be the right option for you if you’ve successfully cleared higher levels of treatment and just need additional counseling.

Partial hospitalization program treatment versus intensive outpatient program treatment

With this comparison, we get closer to comparing apples to apples. There is a significant time requirement difference between the two, though. If you chose the intensive outpatient program option, you would need to report for treatment three to five days a week and plan on spending four to six hours of each of those days in therapy. That’s less time in treatment than the partial hospitalization program that we mentioned above required.

There is another difference between partial hospitalization program treatment and intensive outpatient program treatment. With less time to devote to treatment in general, individual therapy would get a larger piece of the pie while in a partial hospitalization program. This means getting less time to devote to groups, families, and outside activities.
